Basement waterproofing in De Pere, WI
Help for the city at the last rapids of the Fox River, on both banks.
De Pere had 25,410 residents at the 2020 census. In 1671, Father Claude Allouez founded the St. Francis Xavier Mission at the last rapids before the Fox River reaches Green Bay, and the name De Pere comes from "Rapides des Pères." The east and west sides grew as separate communities until 1890, when West De Pere was consolidated into De Pere. St. Norbert College, founded in 1898, sits on the west bank.
What's the ground like?
The Fox River valley here is nearly flat for two or three miles back from each bank, and the 1929 USDA soil survey of Brown County describes the river channel as cut 25 to 50 feet below the valley floor. That same survey found the county's largest areas of heavy Superior clay on each side of the Fox River southwest of Green Bay, which takes in much of the De Pere area. Clay like that is slow to drain and heavy when wet, so seepage at the floor edge and bowing block walls are both common topics.
Housing on both banks
Older blocks near the river and the college have a mix of block, poured and some older masonry basements. Newer subdivisions on the city's edges and in Ledgeview and Lawrence mostly have poured walls, where cracks, window wells and backfill settlement are the usual leak points.
Common jobs in De Pere
- Interior drain tile and sumps in clay-soil basements
- Wall anchors and carbon fiber for bowing block walls
- Crack injection in newer poured basements

Is De Pere's clay soil a problem for basements?
It can be. Heavy clay drains slowly and swells when wet, which keeps water against foundations and can push on block walls over time.
